The Building Buddies exhibition portrays a small community where everyone is busy working on their homes. Different characters\, “buddies”\, invite young children to play\, explore\, collaborate\, create\, and learn while improving the neighborhood. \nGrab a helmet and a safety vest to wear throughout the exhibition before you: \n\nOrganize and plan a house with Peter the Architect\nHelp Eva brighten up her bungalow inside and out\nBuild a doghouse for Winston the Bulldog\nHelp Pipa Longpipe finish renovating her home\nClimb and build with Billy the Brick Layer\nConstruct a chimney to keep the Walltons safe and warm\n\n“Building Buddies is more than just play—it’s hands-on problem-solving\, teamwork\, and creativity in action”\, says Sally Dreher\, Curator of Education. “Every paint stroke and block stack introduces kids to the core ideas of STEAM\, helping them see how science\, technology\, engineering\, art\, and math are all around them. It’s a fun and powerful way to spark curiosity and confidence in the next generation of creators”. \nBuilding Buddies provides an immersive discovery environment that encourages the development of science and process skills at an early age and provides development skills and learning opportunities including large and fine motor skills\, imagination and pretend play\, logical thinking\, and social interaction. \nBuilding Buddies is on display through January 4\, 2026. DESCRIPTION:The Flint Hills Discovery Center (FHDC) opens an exclusive temporary exhibit on Saturday\, January 10. \nGrassland Mini-Golf invites guests to discover the rich ecology of the tallgrass prairie as they play through nine minigolf holes. Score a hole-in-one and discover a story about prairie plants\, animals\, and the delicate balance of this unique ecosystem.\n\nNavigate the night to meet nocturnal animals and hit the ball through the tree.\nPutt\, putt\, putt the ball gently down the stream\, using the rocks to guide the way.\nStep back in time to discover a Mosasaur Fossil but be careful not to get bit.\nHerd the ball into the barn down on the ranch.\nand more!\n\nEach of the nine minigolf holes is designed by the FHDC staff to introduce guests to a part of the endangered Flint Hills ecosystem and educate them about the importance of preserving the prairie. \n“What better way to introduce people to the Flint Hills ecosystem than with a fun-filled 9-hole minigolf course\,” said Stephen Bridenstine\, FHDC Director. “This exhibit will have you thinking on your feet as you aim for that hole-in-one. And when you combine it with our Stepping into the Prairie immersive exhibit\, it is guaranteed fun for the whole family.” \nVisitors can also solve several prairie puzzler brain teasers to improve their score. \nThank you to our sponsors\, The Flint Hills Discovery Center Foundation\, and Visit Manhattan. \nIn addition to Grassland Mini-Golf\, the Flint Hills Discovery Center is pleased to bring back Stepping into the Prairie.
