Thanks to a grant from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)\, admission to the Discovery Center and all activities are free this day. \nAt Aerospace Day\, youth of all ages are invited to: \n\n\nPilot a flight simulator\nDesign and launch rockets\nFly state-of-the-art drones\nPerform flight experiments\nCreate Balsa wood gliders\nMeet pilots and engineers\nExplore model airplanes\nLearn the history of NASA\nView and touch real aviation artifacts\nWatch model Harry Potter Snitches fly\nSee the Mission Aerospace temporary exhibit\n\nThe first 500 kids will receive a free STEM activity kit.\n\n“Not every kid can see themselves working on state-of-the-art aircraft or rockets that fly into space\,” said Sally Dreher\, FHDC Curator of Education “That’s why an event like Aerospace Day is so critically important where every child can meet a pilot\, technician\, or engineer who looks like them and hopefully inspires them to pursue education and a career in the aerospace industry.” \nThe event will feature various K-State student groups including the Minorities in Aerospace and Technology Club\, Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers\, and Society of Women Engineers. \nAdditional partners include the Kansas State University College of Engineering\, the University of Kansas Aerospace Engineering program\, DoD Kansas STARBASE\, the Combat Air Museum of Topeka\, the Eisenhower Presidential Library & Museum\, Flint Hills Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 1364\, Spirit AeroSystems\, and Olsson Engineering. \n\n\nThe Grill to Go and Jinzy Co Food Truck will have lunch available for purchase from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Scarecrow Snowcones will be on-site from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunny 102.5 will be on location with a live remote from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. \nFunding for Aerospace Day comes from a $40\,000 Community Anchor grant from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Traveling 100\,000 miles over four years\, Forsberg crisscrossed the Plains from Canada to Mexico\, capturing the wildlife\, habitats\, and conservation challenges in the heart of the continent. \nOriginally a book project\, Forsberg set out to capture what some outside observers call “flyover country” in an attempt to bring attention to and build appreciation for this often-overlooked region. Inspiring\, informative\, and timely – the exhibit is a love letter to this endangered ecosystem. \nOn Friday\, November 3\, join Forsberg at the Discovery Center for a private tour with a VIP Gallery Walk and a public presentation during which he will share the story of the dedicated people working to keep the wild prairie alive. DESCRIPTION:Join the Discovery Center Education staff and local astronomers for a free and safe viewing of the annular solar eclipse\, which occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth while it is at its farthest point from Earth\, making the moon appear smaller than the sun which creates a “ring of fire” effect in the sky. \nChris Sorensen\, amateur astronomer\, will give a presentation in our classroom at 10 a.m. to learn what makes this type of eclipse special and how to safely view it. Or\, just come to Blue Earth Plaza anytime from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. where solar viewing glasses will be provided while supplies last\, and telescopes will be set up for observing the phenomenon. \nIn Manhattan\, we will have an approximately 70% eclipse\, and it will be at its maximum around 11:45 a.m. \nDon’t miss your chance to see this rare celestial occurrence; you’ll have to wait another eight years before the next one comes around.
